Curly Maple Beidermeier Display Cases

Dane Gallery, Nantucket, Massachusetts

[Nantucket Glass Case]

A fellow artisan had experienced some success in his work, and decided to invest in relocating his retail business to a better marketing location on the island of Nantucket. This opportunity worked to his advantage, and he determined that he required some appropriate display cases for smaller glass items such as jewelry, perfume vials, small vases, amphora, etc.

Given the limited display space available, we decided on two large wall cases, and one free standing case that doubled as a sales counter. These were to be made of curly maple, with ebonized maple bands as contrast on the pilasters. The choice of Beidermeier style focused on a simplicity of line as well as color, to allow the sparkling glass to be center stage. Even the pediment, the bonnet top and the base cornice were designed with an emphasis on clarity of form, rather than ornament. Glass shelving was used in the wall case to allow the lighting to permeate the space, and increase the translucency of the artworks.
